girls against gold sparkle in Ash Street
Why have these girls declared their aversion to gold?
Ten female graduates of the Jewellery and Object Design, Advanced Diploma course from the
Design Centre Enmore have united for a second year running to exhibit on a theme, this
year being girls against gold.
They question the preciousness of traditional materials commonly used in jewellery -
mainly gold. Inspired by our idea of material value as well as inflated gold prices these
artists explore materials and ideas not conventionally applied to jewellery.
Ten female artists create quirky, unique, handmade jewellery and objects aimed to
inspire, provoke, and make you ask ‘what makes something precious’.

Smoking Girl and Other Tales by Sassy Park until 2 May 2009
This exhibition is a departure from Park’s earlier colourful pieces depicting everyday images and characters from her surroundings.
Inspired by fables and morality tales, illustrations from childhood stories and love songs these new pieces evoke a playful nostalgia for a romantic past. Charms of love and loss, forgotten relatives and favourite pets decorate Park’s fine porcelain pendants.
These diminutive objects of familiar faces and neighbourhood animals are delicately painted in silhouette. Each unique piece resonates with its own story and humorous suggestion. Maiden aunts of dubious morals and young girls with unbecoming behaviour allude to secrets and scandalous gossip from family histories.
Sassy Park has a Bachelor of Arts and Post-graduate Diploma from the Sydney College of the Arts and was awarded the Desiderius Orban Travelling Scholarship for painting. Park has exhibited in Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane, and only recently turned her hand to painting on porcelain.

The exhibition of exquisite accoutrements reflects upon the spirit of the Elizabethan Era, its poetry, its people, and the ornaments of the court.
The work is the outcome of new research undertaken at the British Museum and the Museum of London during the artist’s recent Australia Council London studio residency.Gallagher has a unique and engaging practice as it combines the precious and non-precious in a truly modern way. His intriguing one-off brooches include coral, gems, gold, silver and embroidered thread, and form quasi-Elizabethan jewels. This tantalising elaborate new series of jewellery expresses both the visions of Arcadia – paradise lost — and the afflicted ennui of the Elizabethan cult of Melancholia.
Rocks by Anna Davern
